Our events

Come and enjoy French culture with us!

Alliance Française Christchurch

is not just a language school... it is Christchurch’s only French cultural centre! Alliance Française Christchurch contributes to a vibrant cultural life in the city by organising many community and cultural events such as concerts, exhibitions, shows, movie screenings, conferences, festivals, social events and our traditional French events: Fête de la Musique, Bastille Day and Beaujolais nouveau. The annual French Film Festival – the largest French cultural event in New Zealand – showcases the best of French contemporary cinema in twelve cities nationwide from March to April. It is promoted by the Alliance Française network and takes place each year in multiple cinemas accross town.

All these events appeal to a broad public, and to anyone who likes French and French-speaking cultures or wants to learn more about them.  To facilitate a wide participation, English is spoken at all events. These events also attract the large French-speaking community of the region and allow our students to immerse themselves in all aspects of French and French-speaking cultures and practise their French.

To keep in touch with our events, subscribe to our newsletter, check our website regularly or follow us on Facebook.

Francophonie Week!

Francophonie Week!

Each year in March, lovers of the French language celebrate, across the five continents, the cultural and linguistic richness and diversity of la Francophonie.

La francophonie (lower case) refers to all those who share a common language: French. It is estimated there are 300 million French-speakers worldwide. La Francophonie (capital letter) is an institution, with 88 francophone member countries, dedicated to promoting cultural and linguistic diversity:  [International Organisation of La Francophonie].

La Francophonie is very diverse. Francophones, who share French as either their mother tongue or as a second language, live across the five continents. Each year on 20 March, they all get together and share their passion for la Francophonie. This date refers to the launch of the Agence de coopération culturelle et technique [Agency of Cultural and Technical Cooperation], created on that day in 1970 in Niamey (Niger), which is now the OIF.

Initiated by the French Ministry of Culture, La Semaine de la langue française et de la Francophonie [French Language and Francophonie Week] is a worldwide celebration in the French cultural network in France and overseas, which concludes on 20 March - la Journée internationale de la Francophonie [International Francophonie Day].
